Veteran Shirts in Heavyweight Cotton, Pique, and Long Sleeve
Veteran shirts here use three blanks: a 6.1 oz garment-dyed heavyweight tee, a 5.2 oz pique polo, and a 4.2 oz long-sleeve cotton shirt. Each is printed or embroidered to order with an era, role, or service design. The guide below compares the tee, polo, and long-sleeve fit, print, and care.

Three shirts, three levels of formality
A veteran shirt can be a casual tee, a collared polo, or a layer for cool weather. The design is often the same; the blank changes how formal it reads and how it fits.
The heavyweight tee is the core. The Comfort Colors 1717 is 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²), garment-dyed, and cut with a relaxed fit. It has a 7/8 inch double-needle topstitched collar, twill-taped neck and shoulders, and double-needle armhole, sleeve, and bottom hems. The heavier cotton holds a large era or role design without show-through, and the garment-dyed color has a broken-in look from the first wear.
The polo is the formal option. The Gildan 64800 is a 5.2 oz ring-spun cotton pique with a semi-fitted cut, a contoured welt collar, a three-button placket, and dyed-to-match buttons. It is embroidered on the left chest rather than printed. That makes it appropriate for a retirement, a reunion, or a workplace where a tee is too casual.
The long-sleeve shirt is the layer. The Bella+Canvas 3501 is 4.2 oz/yd.² combed ring-spun cotton with a regular fit, side seams, a cover-stitched collar, and 2-inch ribbed cuffs. It is lighter than the 1717 and works under a jacket or on its own in mild weather.
Print and embroidery
The tees and long-sleeve shirts use direct-to-garment printing. Water-based ink is sprayed into the cotton fibres, so the design sits in the fabric rather than on top of it. On a garment-dyed 1717, the print can look slightly softer than on a bright, piece-dyed tee because the fabric surface is less uniform.
The polo is embroidered. Stitching holds small lettering and gives the design a raised edge, but very fine detail can disappear in thread. The role and era designs are built with bold spacing for that reason.
Sizing across the range
The 1717 is relaxed. The 3501 is regular. The 64800 polo is semi-fitted. If you are ordering for a group, collect each person’s normal size and check the size guide rather than guessing. The 1717 leaves room through the body, so a person who normally wears a medium may prefer a small for a closer fit.
For a retirement gift, the polo is the safest choice if you know the size. For a reunion, the heavyweight tee is more casual and easier to order in a range of sizes. For a layered gift, the long-sleeve shirt plus a hat is a practical set.
Care
Wash printed shirts inside out in cold water and tumble dry low. Do not iron over the print. Wash the polo inside out and air dry to protect the embroidery and the pique surface. The long-sleeve shirt follows the same rules as the tee.
Gift notes
A veteran shirt is a good gift when you know the era or role. A general VETERAN design is safer if you do not. If the recipient is particular about fit, a hat or a mug avoids the sizing question entirely. The gifts for veterans page groups those lower-risk options.
Frequently asked questions
What heavyweight tee do you use?
The core tee is the Comfort Colors 1717, a 6.1 oz/yd² (206.8 g/m²) garment-dyed shirt in 100% ring-spun cotton. It has a relaxed fit, a 7/8 inch double-needle topstitched collar, twill-taped neck and shoulders, and double-needle hems.
Is the polo embroidered or printed?
The polo is embroidered on the left chest. It is a Gildan 64800 unisex pique polo in 5.2 oz ring-spun cotton, semi-fitted, with a contoured welt collar, a three-button placket, and dyed-to-match buttons.
How does the long-sleeve shirt fit?
The Bella+Canvas 3501 is a 4.2 oz/yd.² unisex long-sleeve shirt with a regular fit, side seams, a cover-stitched collar, and 2-inch ribbed cuffs. It is lighter than the heavyweight tee and works as a layer in mild weather.
Do the shirts run true to size?
The Comfort Colors 1717 has a relaxed fit; the 3501 has a regular fit; the Gildan 64800 polo is semi-fitted. If you are between sizes and want a closer fit, choose the smaller size in the 1717. If you want a loose fit, size up.
Will the print crack after washing?
Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold, and tumble dry low. Do not iron over the print. High dryer heat and direct ironing are the main causes of cracking. The polo embroidery should be washed inside out and air dried to protect the stitching.
Which veteran shirt is best for a retirement?
A polo in a dark color with the recipient's era or role is the most formal option. A heavyweight tee is more casual and better for a reunion or everyday wear. If you do not know the role, choose a general VETERAN design rather than guessing.
