About this design
A veteran compass hat and tee pairing a compass rose and mountain horizon with VETERAN lettering for any era of service.
Veteran compass puts a drawn compass rose beside the word VETERAN, with a low mountain line running underneath both. The rose is built from eight heavy spokes inside a stitched circle, and the mountains are a single silhouette, so the whole mark survives being reduced to a cap front.
The idea is direction rather than destination. A compass tells you where you are and which way is north; it does not record where you have been. That suits the many veterans whose service was not a named war: cold-war postings, peacetime duty, a deployment that does not fit neatly into a campaign label.
The compass is drawn with thick strokes and a small number of shapes for one practical reason. Embroidery thread has a minimum stroke width and a minimum letter height, and fine detail turns to mush on a curved cap panel. What you see on the tee is the same artwork, printed at a scale where the extra resolution finally shows.
