About this design

A Korean War veteran hat and tee honoring 1950–1955 Korean conflict service, embroidered on caps and printed on heavyweight cotton.

Korean War veteran is set in the same two-line stack as the rest of the era series: KOREAN WAR above, VETERAN below, a single rule between them. The war it names is often called the forgotten one, which is exactly why the lettering is large and unambiguous rather than decorative.

The conflict ran from June 1950 to the armistice in July 1953, and the VA's benefit window extends to January 1955 because service connected to the conflict continued after the shooting stopped. That gap between the war's end and the benefit period is one of the things the collection page explains, because it catches people out when they are assembling a claim.

There is no map of the peninsula, no flag, and no unit marking in the artwork. Partly that keeps the design legible on a curved cap panel, and partly it keeps the item clear of the insignia that federal law reserves for licensed use. What remains is the plain statement of era and title, stitched or printed depending on the piece.

Structured six-panel, mid profile, 3.5 in (8.9 cm) crown, hard buckram front panels, mesh back. Available sizes: One size.

What are the Korean War and Korean conflict dates?

The fighting began on June 25, 1950 and ended in an armistice on July 27, 1953, so the war never formally closed with a peace treaty. For benefits, 38 CFR § 3.2 defines the Korean conflict period as June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955, which is the window the VA uses when it assesses service.

Does the design say anything about a specific unit or division?

No. It reads KOREAN WAR over VETERAN with a rule between the lines. Naming a division or a regiment would mean reproducing unit insignia that the Department of Defense licenses, and it would also narrow the design to one part of the war.
