About this design
A Cold War veteran hat and tee for anyone who served between 1945 and 1991, embroidered or printed with no insignia.
Cold War veteran is COLD WAR over VETERAN, rule between, in the same heavy capitals as the rest of the era series. It is the design for the long service that never produced a named war: the garrison years, the missile fields, the ships on station, the flights that turned back at the edge of somebody else's airspace.
The period runs from the end of the Second World War to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the people who served it are often left out of the shorthand that starts at Korea and picks up again at Vietnam. The artwork does not try to correct that with a slogan. It puts the era on the front of a cap in two words and lets the wearer answer the follow-up question if they feel like it.
The caps are embroidered and the tee is printed, and the lettering is sized for the smallest of those surfaces first. As with every design in the range there is no seal, medal, or branch insignia in the artwork, so nothing here claims to be official issue.

What are the Cold War dates used on this site?
Section 1084 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1998 (Public Law 105-85) defines the Cold War as September 2, 1945 through December 26, 1991, and that is the window Congress attached to the Cold War Recognition Certificate. The VA's own periods of war in 38 CFR § 3.2 are separate definitions, and the Cold War collection page explains the difference.
Is Cold War service treated differently from wartime service for VA compensation?
For service-connected disability compensation the rates are the same: 38 U.S.C. § 1131 for peacetime service incorporates the rate table in 38 U.S.C. § 1114. The wartime distinction matters mainly for non-service-connected Veterans Pension, which requires active service inside a statutory wartime period.
